A wonderful Medieval Castle

When visiting Fort-la-Latte, Cap Fréhel is not to be missed. An extraordinary peninsula teeming with beautiful natural scenery, visitors can enjoy soaring cliffs, exquisite beaches and views of both the Emerald Coast and the Channel Islands. The peninsula is also home to a historical lighthouse and even a seabird reserve, which hosts common shags, northern fulmars, oystercatchers and more.

Fort-la-Latte was built in the 14th century, and was then fortified by Vauban in the 17th century. Restoration and maintenance work started on the castle in 1931 by the Joüon Longrais family, who have chosen to retain all of the structure’s original attributes: the drawbridge, the walls, the dungeon, the weapons of war and the medieval garden.

Arguably the best place to view Fort-la-Latte is at the entrance, where its architecture can be appreciated in its full glory.
