A International Heritage

Founded in 910AD, the Benedictine Abbey of Cluny was governed by a line of exceptional abbots. At the height of its influence in the 12th century, its ‘empire’ comprised around 10,000 monks.

With nine centuries of monastic history, Cluny has a rich religious heritage. The town itself contains several monastic buildings, an Art and Archaeology Museum that houses a number of Roman sculptures, a monastic village with examples of Roman and Gothic houses, two churches, and the majestic Hotel-Dieu, where visitors can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the Tour des Fromages. A particular highlight for visitors is the Maior Ecclesia, Cluny’s largest church. Quite simply a fascinating feat of architecture, the church contains the highest vaulted roof of the Romanesque world, rising some 30 metres above the nave.
