A mere 12 miles away from the town of Blois, Château de Chaumont is located in the village of Chaumont-sur-Loire in the heart of the Loire Valley.
The story of the Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire begins around the year 1000, when Eudes I, Count of Blois, built a fortress on a hillside overlooking the river in order to keep watch over the border between the counties of Blois and Anjou. Then, in 1054, the château came into the possession of Sulpice I of Amboise. The Amboise family then owned the property for the next 500 years.
Catherine de’ Medici later acquired the château, and gave it to Diane de Poitiers. Two noted astrologers, Ruggieri and Nostradamus, are also known to have paid visits.
The fabulously wealthy heiress of sugar magnate Louis Say, Marie Charlotte Constance Say purchased the château in 1875, married Prince Henri Amédée de Broglie, and for the next half-century the luxurious residence became the setting for sumptuous banquets that brought together the distinguished nobility of Europe.
The entire estate of Château de Chaumont was transferred to the administrative region of Centre-Val-de-Loire in 2007. It covers more than 21 hectares, which include the château itself, the stables and the ornamental garden, along with a vast woodland and meadows.
