Situated in south-eastern France, Lyon is the capital of the Auvergene-Rhône-Alpes region. A mere 2-hour train ride from Paris, Lyon is also only a 1 hour 40-minute journey away from both the Mediterranean coast and France’s Alpine ski resorts. Its Saint-Exupéry airport serves 115 destinations and is used by 8.5 million passengers each year.
Lyon is famous for its city centre, which lies between Fourvière hill and the Saône River. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the city centre, or Old Lyon, was previously a Gallic settlement and contains more than 2000 years of history. A marriage of old and new, Lyon’s contemporary architecture stands harmoniously alongside the structures of the past. Visitors can enjoy the Roman vestiges in the Fourvière district, or wander through the ‘traboule’ passageways of its Renaissance quarter. The city also contains a beautiful peninsula between the Rhône and Saône rivers, as well as contemporary structures designed by Renzo Piano (the Cité Internationale), Jean Nouvel (Lyon’s Opera House) and Santiago Calatrava (the TGV train station at Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport).
