Situated between the peninsula of Lège-Cap-Ferret, the Dune du Pilat and the Delta de la Leyre, and at the entrance to the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park, Arcachon Bay is the perfect peaceful getaway destination. Lovers of Arcachon oysters can explore the surrounding oyster villages and taste the delicacies straight from the fresh, salty water, while nature enthusiasts can embark on walking tours, biking tours or boat trips, hike in the nearby pine forest, or take walks across the bay’s long, sandy beaches.
A multitude of landscapes awaits: just one hour from the city of Bordeaux, Arcachon Bay is a stone’s throw from the Dune du Pilat, the highest dune in all of Europe. With the picturesque communes of Arcachon, La Teste-de-Buch, Gujan-Mestras and Le Teich all close by, holidaymakers can enjoy a variety of experiences in just one trip.
La Dune du Pilat: At a height of more than 100 metres, with a length of 3km and filled with millions of cubic metres of fine sand, La Dune du Pilat is constantly in motion, gradually reclaiming the forest with the help of the wind and the tide. From the top of the dune, visitors are treated to a unique view of the Banc d’Arguin Nature Reserve and the forest on the Pointe du Cap Ferret.
Le Banc d'Arguin: At the foot of the Dune du Pilat and opposite the Pointe du Cap Ferret is the Banc d’Arguin Nature Reserve. Constantly moving and changing shape due with the ocean’s current, le Banc d’Arguin is a protected stopover site for certain species of migratory bird.
Oyster farming ports: When visiting the region, be sure to visit the oyster villages, meet the local oyster farmers and fishermen and sample some fresh oysters at the water’s edge.
Cabanes Tchanquées: At the heart of this protected natural site stand two wooden huts, originally built for supervising the oyster farms. At high tides, the Cabanes are surrounded by water, and visitors are able to draw near, view and sail around them by boat.
